// Incredible Russia
- To make new friends. Russians forge fiercely loyal friendships, and connecting with them can be a rich and rewarding experience. Building relationships with Russians will help open up personal and business opportunities, as well as help you to see the world in a new way.
- To travel (with ease). Aside from the obvious Russia, learning one of the 6 official languages of the United Nations can help ease the stress of navigating many countries in Eastern Europe, including Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and many more! It may also surprise you to know that my Russian skills came in very handy in Turkey, where Russian tourists outnumber visitors of any other foreign nationality!
- To challenge your mind. For native English speakers, Russian is rated a 3 out of 4 in terms of difficulty to learn. From the six Russian cases, to verbs of motion, to participles, the grammar will stretch your brain to think (and communicate) in new ways.
- To finally be able to tell people that you’ve not only read War and Peace, but you’ve read it in the original. Major respect points.
- Russian is the most widely spoken of the “Balto-Slavic” language family. That means that if you learn Russian, other languages such as Ukrainian, Czech, Slovak, Polish, and Bulgarian will all be easier to pick up as well.
- For romance—as they say, “with love from Russia”, right? Russia is well-known for its beautiful women and chivalrous dating culture, who wouldn’t want to get in on that?
- Russian is a language of the future. As the Internet’s 2 most-used language online by content, Russian is slowly but surely growing in popularity. Russian is also highly valued in the world of cybersecurity and computer science—that means adding Russian language to your resume could land you a better job or higher pay.
- To study in some of the world’s top universities. Moscow’s Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) consistently ranks among the Top 100 universities in the world. Russia’s IT education is also world-renowned, giving international students a good reason to start learning. (Very few programs exist in English-only in Russia, and most students have to pass a B1 TORFL exam to gain acceptance into Russian higher education).
- It’s super cool. But really—who wouldn’t want to learn the language of Cold War spies and nefarious Hollywood villains?
- To unlock the enigmatic, exciting world of Russia. As much as you try, if you don’t learn Russian, you’ll always be missing a vital piece of understanding the puzzle of the “Russian Soul”. To this day, picking up my first Russian textbook was the best decision I have ever made. New doors are opened to me with every passing year, and my love for the language and its people only grows stronger.
